The High Performance Rural Schools ( HIPERS ) Project was established
in 1996 with the aim of improving the quality of education in rural schools.
The project involved Year 6 (UPSR) and Form 3 (PMR) students. Initially
10 primary schools in the Kuching Division were selected in a pilot project
before it was extended to other divisions. The results in terms of academic
performance were very encouraging and therefore the project was extended
to the Samarahan Division in 1997 where 4 secondary schools were added.
